UCLA MD and DO Housestaff enrolled in ACGME-accredited training programs are represented by CIR-SEIU and receive the following benefits:
- Educational Stipend: $500/year (PGY 1); $1,000/year (PGY 2+)
- Housing stipend of $1000/month is included in salary
- Meals: $3,000 annual allocation for use in UCLA Hospital cafeterias (Westwood & Santa Monica)
- Residents/Fellows have access to an App-based meal delivery service available for use at select hospital rotation sites.
- Relocation Reimbursement: Newly appointed Residents receive up to $2,750 in reimbursement for expenses incurred due to relocation. Subject to the University’s Travel and Relocation Policy.
- License Reimbursement: Covers initial License and renewal fee, USMLE Step 3 fee
Chief Salaries
In-training Chief Residents receive a $50/month stipend in addition to the appropriate PGY-level salary.

UCLA provides trainees a rich package of health and welfare benefits at no cost to trainees, their spouse, and/or their dependents. These plans include health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.
UC Safe Harbor Retirement Savings Plan
Residents and fellows are automatically enrolled in the UC Safe Harbor plan, and will continue to be enrolled as long as they are employed by the University of California in an eligible appointment.

Dedicated University Housing
UCLA Housing, in a joint venture with UCLA Medical, purchased The Boulevard in 2020. The 5-building apartment complex is located on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Los Angeles. The complex features a contemporary modern style with ground floor retail in the larger buildings and is prioritized first to UCLA Medical’s House Staff.
International Medical Graduates
Only the clinical J-1 visa sponsored by ECFMG is acceptable when applying to an ACGME accredited training program at UCLA.

UCLA physician residents and fellows with MD or DO degrees and enrolled in ACGME-accredited programs are covered by the benefits of the CIR-SEIU UCLA resident contract which includes many additional benefits including housing allowance, education stipends, vacation, leaves of absence (parental, sick, etc.), fatigue mitigation transportation, meal allocations, and more.

Options are easily available to help ensure trainees get home safely after work. Trainees may use app-based services such as Lyft and Uber to go home after a shift and back to work the next day.
